Hello: ZUUL Systems

Inside Visitor Management

This is the seventh in a series of interviews I am doing with new and innovative companies in and around the Smart Lock, Security and Access Control industry. It's time they have a voice and we meet them. If there are any companies you'd like to see highlighted in the future, let me know. I plan to do this regularly. I am open to your feedback and appreciate the heads up. Thank you!

It is funny how sometimes life and work collide in weird and wonderful ways. Take ZUUL Systems for instance. I have known Adam Lucks, Principal CEO, for over 30 years, but up until he reached out on LinkedIn a month ago, 25 years have came and went (one reason I love LinkedIn). Fast forward, after catching up, I found Adam's founder story intriguing and similar to a lot of the entrepreneurs I've worked for, gotten to know and meet along the way. ZUUL Systems was born, like a lot of start-ups, out of a place with intimate knowledge about a use case (raised in Florida around gated communities all his life), worked in a different industry and gained transferrable skills (finance, where he became an expert in risk management and analysis), recognized friction and frustration by consumers (his dad expressed frustration with how difficult it was to access gated communities), and a lack of fear and belief that he can deliver a better solution than what's currently on the market (creates ZUUL Systems). I think Adam, his father and ZUUL are onto something and wanted to share their story with you.

As always, please let me know what you think and if there are any companies I should highlight. Thank you!

1. Tell us a little about your business.

ZUUL Systems focuses on streamlining access control within larger gated communities. We wanted to provide a modern way to deal with the age-old hassle of entering a gated neighborhood, even if it already had a gate guard. We started by evaluating the main players in the access control market and realized many communities were using antiquated systems that aren’t efficient or effective. With the ZUUL Systems app, ZUUL has eliminated that out-of-date dysfunctional structure and replaced it with a standardized security system that is convenient for everyone.

2. What got you into the smart lock/access control business?

It all started because my father was at the right place at the wrong time. One day, he was ranting to me about how it took him 45 minutes to get into my sister's gated neighborhood. As his rant went on, a light bulb turned on in my head. My father and I spent the next several hours discussing every single aspect of the guest entry process. We brainstormed how we could streamline a guest and resident’s entry experience while ensuring both security and convenience were maintained.

3. What markets and verticals do you serve?

We currently serve the residential market, focusing on gated communities with guards, and high-rise condominiums.

4. What is one thing that you were surprised to find out about the security/lock/access control industry?

In the past, I was immersed in sales, a world of fast money and almost immediate decision making. The access control industry moves at a much healthier pace, giving me the opportunity to nurture relationships and contribute much more time and attention to developments with HOAs and property managers.

5. Where do you see your business in five years?

In five years, I believe we will have made a significant impact on gated communities and high-rise condominiums in states such as FL, TX, NV, CA, and VA, where secure, gated communities continue to be built. In time, I can see ZUUL Systems being used in dorms, commercial parks, and even small businesses with private clientele. Essentially, ZUUL Systems can be anywhere access control is warranted.
